During the summer months, the days get longer and the hours spent sleeping become shorter. There is just so much over the summer and those all important eight hours of sleep soon turn into five or six hours… if you are lucky. Like most people who are burning the candle at both ends, I find it difficult to function without my morning coffee. Maybe it’s psychological or perhaps I’m coffee dependent, but as soon as I have a bit of coffee in my system I feel more awake.
There are some downsides to being a big coffee drinker, but the main reason why I limit myself to one cup of the rocket fuel a day is because it stains your teeth! Once I have exceeded my coffee limit for the day, I look for energy in other sources and I have found energy in some of the most unlikely places.
I believe in the power of water! It can do almost anything… including keeping you awake! Dehydration can cause tiredness so make sure that you are drinking water constantly throughout the day, especially during the summer months. Drinking lots of water may result in more frequent trips to the toilet but this will also help you to stay awake!
If your eyes feel heavy due to being sat at your desk all day, get up and move! Do an exercise class during your lunch break or go for a run, and you will soon find yourself feeling revved up again. If you are unable to take a lunch break, go for a little walk around your office every few hours to stretch your legs and improve your blood circulation.
When we feel tired, we usually opt for a sugary snack to give us a quick energy boost but this causes a spike in our insulin levels and once they have dropped, we will feel even more tired than we did before. Swap the sugary afternoon snacks for something high in protein and rich in vitamins, to provide your brain and body with the energy it needs. Snack on peanut butter, nuts, kale, fresh fruit or salmon to help to increase your energy levels gradually.
As soon as the afternoon comes, I turn to Radio 1 Xtra to help me to get through the rest of the day. It’s hard to fall asleep when I have Charli Sloth laughing in my ears and playing my favourite Biggie Smalls songs! Listen to the radio or create a playlist containing your favourite songs and it will only be a matter of time before you are fighting the urge to sing your heart out to Beyonce and show off your best Michael Jackson moves.
If none of the above has managed to increase your energy levels, head over to buzzfeed.com. Nothing stimulates your brain more than trying to score 100% on a quiz about Friends!
