Tips for staying healthy while travelling

DSC_0580I have been in Kos since Saturday and I have worked out every day but I have indulged every day too. I have unashamedly eaten bread; pancakes covered in Nutella and chocolate cake in one sitting (breakfast, interestingly enough) and still rocked a bikini afterwards!

Life is for living

Holidays are a time to relax and enjoy the beauty that is around us. But, as much as I like to sip my cocktails by the pool and enjoy my treats, I still workout and eat healthy (when I am not eating pancakes) because life is all about balance. But, I don’t over-exercise in order to over eat.

If you are heading on holiday and are worried about falling off the waggon, don’t be! Relax, have fun and take each day as it comes. And here are a few tips on how to maintain your healthy habits while you are having fun in the sun.

Don’t Skip Breakfast

Although you may be tempted to skip breakfast in order to use your calories else where, skipping breakfast is only going to slow down your metabolism and make you more likely to overeat later on in the day. Start your day with a breakfast that you would usually eat at home. For me, this is usually an omelette, toast and a side of fruit. But if I fancy pancakes, I will choose the pancakes!

Avoid Liquid Lunches

Although it may seem like fun at the time, liquid lunches always end badly! The sugary cocktails will make you crave unhealthy food, and you’ll probably miss out on the evening activities due to one of the notable side effects of liquid lunches…falling asleep! Don’t substitute your afternoon meals for booze. If you want something light, opt for a salad. Grilled meat salads are my poolside favourites and they taste even better with a cosmopolitan on the side.

Workout

Trade the gym for the greater outdoors and let the world be your personal gym. Swimming, scuba diving and playing a sport are my favourite ways to stay active while on holiday. Sometimes Jordon and I spend hours playing sports simply because we are having fun; we didn’t notice the time. Pick a sport or an activity and see how much fun you have playing out in the sun. We usually head out just as the sun is starting to set. The air is cooler, and the sky lights up in the most beautiful shades of blue, orange and pink, as the sun begins to fade.

Eat Locally

The benefits of holidaying in a warm or tropical country is that you have more access to fresh food. Enjoy the local cuisine and take advantage of all of the wonderful flavours that they have to offer.

Walk

If you have been reading my blog for a while you will know how much I love walking. The health benefits of walking are often overlooked and walking is also a great way to explore your chosen destination by foot. Swap the tour bus and taxis for a comfy pair of trainers, a map and see where the road takes you.

Enjoy!

Having a healthy attitude towards food and exercise is fundamental to living a healthy lifestyle. If you want to eat pancakes for breakfast, eat them! If you want to sit by the pool and drink Prosecco on a tap, go for it. Life is all balance and doing what makes you happy.
